Welcome to the Class!

Hello writers!

Welcome to Written Communication and welcome to the blog for the course. I hope to use this blog to post what we do each day, to post assignments, and to mention upcoming projects. I will appoint a class secretary each day. When it is your turn, please post before the end of the day and let us know what we did that day. You should write your post with the absent student in mind - remember, one day you might be absent and you would appreciate a little heads-up, right? Your fellow students and I greatly appreciate it. I started to learn about blogging just last semester, so forgive me if I am a little new to this technology. I did find it useful for myself and for the students.

I am looking forward to a great semester and look forward to getting to know all of you.

Anne

  16. Alright, so it seems I cannot create my own blog post on this site...or I'm blind as a bat and just can't figure out how to. Both are equally likely. At any rate, I'm too frustrated right now to try anything else. If someone else knows how, please tell me so I can post this properly.

So, here's the class summary for August 25th, 2010. I'm sorry if this is too brief, or not really what you were looking for, but I'm making an effort.
The class started with a reminder of the assignment that is due tomorrow. For those of you who have forgotten, that's the project where we need to make a visual display of the six traits (creativity, curiosity, motivation, technological savvy, confidence, and organization). We were also treated with a sample of an excellently done project by one of the students in the class.
Attendance was taken after this reminder. A quick survey was handed out to the class to help Anne determine our interests in reading, writing, and school. After the survey was completed, Anne made sure that everyone knew where the blog was and took the time to explain how to create an account and post here.
Next was a brief explanation on the three different kinds of procrastination. These three were rebellion, laziness, and lack of confidence.
After that, we were given a brief introduction to all of the online data bases that we have available to us. The main focus went into the EBSCOhost explanation. EBSCOhost is a place to go to find periodicals, and all of us need to have an account there by Tuesday. In order to help us create an account and navigate the site, we were shown how to get there and what to do when we did get there.
    STEPS:
From the MSTC home page, click on 'Current Students'
Select 'MSTC Library' from the choices on the left under 'Academic Information'.
There you will see a list of the services offered. Click on 'Online Databases'.
There will be a long list, which was referred to as the yellow brick road in class. Scroll down that list until you find the link to EBSCOhost and click on it.
Before creating a profile (first time you go there) or opening a folder (any time you go there) you must select databases from the list. You are able to select all of them.
After doing this, select the 'Sign In' button and select 'Create a New Account'. The rest of the process is self-explanatory.
Anne then demonstrated how to properly use the site for research, and explained how the search engine there is like the Google search engine, but much more picky about spelling. She also recommended that we used the 'Advanced Search' option to narrow down our selection of articles. The class closed with her explaining that we could use EBSCOhost at home, but only with our Student IDs.

    *Assignments*
Six Trait Visual - Due Thursday
Creating an EBSCOhost Account - Due Tuesday

  21. Today in class we came up with three of our favorite catagories and worked on comming up with five questions for each one, that we will be reasearching tommorow. So do not forget to bring your questions with you to class. We will be meeting in room 104.

Also do not forget to check out the Ebscohost website, and google. See what you like better, and come up with at least a paragraph of what you liked and disliked about both.

    Things to remember...

Primary source is a direct contact, ex. interviews , surveys, letter.

Secondary source is reading somthing from a Newspaper, or Magazine.

Scholary ( ebscohost ) - is somthing written by professionals. Somthing with an educatiing purpose.

Popular ( google )- is somthing that appeals to the average american ex- Journailist, or reporters.

Remember that Ebscohost is Picky and too make sure you are spelling everything correctly.

  24. Hello everyone. Here is the summary for today's class and what went on.

~We spent a good portion of the hour speaking generally upon the proper way to handle writing a good complaint letter to a company.

~We also spent a good deal of time looking at what we should and should not be doing within the writing in the complaint letter.

~We wrapped up the day by partnering up with one other person. From there we proofread a business letter that was poorly written and needed some changes.

~We then looked at notes about how to properly incorporate your subject within your sentence.

    That was basically the day.

    Seeya in class.

    ~Carter

  26. Summary of class on Tuesday, September 14th:

We all received our graded concern letters back in our folders. We then went over a worksheet on "wordiness". We got some info on how to check for a good research paper article:
~Check for any sort of Bias
    ~Check for an Author
~Check the name of the article and magazine
We also added four more questions to our list of top three topic questions. You should have 9 now. If you cant think of any questions its not a good topic.
We looked at searching Google and EbscoHost using "savior siblings" as an example.
Homework for Thursday is to have 3 Ebsco searches that have been manipulated.
Homework for Wednesday is to bring 2 sizes of notecards, and to bring 2 articles.
That was class for Tuesday, the 14th.
    See ya at 3!

  27. Summary of class on 9/22

-We were reminded that we need three articles on a research topic by tomorrow from Ebsco to write a thesis

-We were reminded that a thesis should include your values, beliefs, feelings and emotions

-We talked about a quote within a quote. Which is a quote that an author included in their paper that another person said. When crediting the quote you will use a double quotation for the author and a single quotation for the person that said it.
---> Example: Say Williams wrote a paper and quoted Robinson in his paper. The proper way to write the quote in YOUR paper is, Williams as quoted by Robinson said "'Brilliant quote.'"
---> If that confuses you just talk to Anne, because it's hard to explain in writing

-We then went over a powerpoint covering run-on sentences. A run-on joins two sentences together without punctuation.
---> Example: I drove my truck I jumped it across the creek.

To fix a run-on look look for a second subject in the sentence

--->One correct sentence: I drove my truck, and jumped it across the creek.

-We then talked about comma splices which join two sentences with a comma

-We also talked about conjunction adverbs, some examples being, therefore, also, however, indeed, etc.

-We closed with writing three sentences using a conjunction adverb, comma, and without a run-on. Along with three questions we had to turn in with the three sentences.

    Hopefully this all makes sense
